Miriam Shapiro

Children of Paradise
3 color lithograph with collage
1983-1984
33-3/4 x 47 -1/2

Born in 1923, Miriam earned her B.A., M.A., and M.F.A. from the University of Iowa. In this work, she utilizes a form known as femmage, a phrase she and artist Melissa Meyer coined to describe a more feminine approach to collage, one which incorporates all elements of a woman's world: intimate, domestic, public, and private. Here her strength as a colorist is revealed as she beautifully represents the warm environment of the private life -- childhood, nourishment through love, food.
